In short
Rosemead toilets from the original build often still have the first tank parts, and they wear out in predictable ways. A running tank, a weak flush or a wobble usually means a new flapper, fill valve, flush valve or wax ring. We match parts to the tank brand and test the fix before we leave.
Your photo checklist
- The tank interior, lid off, flapper visible
- The maker’s name on the bowl or tank
- A side view of the base where it meets the floor
- The angle stop and supply tube
- A clip of the tank refilling
Covered on a Rosemead visit
- Flappers and flush valves that let water seep into the bowl
- Fill valves that hiss, run on, or refill by themselves
- Loose or broken handles, buttons and lift chains
- A rocking toilet reset on a new wax ring and closet bolts
- The supply line and stop valve behind the toilet
- Toilet seats, and a full toilet replacement when the old one is past saving
Outside what we take on
- Gas piping of any kind past the existing flex connector.
- Roof, foundation and structural repairs.
- Tearing out and rebuilding a whole bathroom or kitchen.
Tanks in a city built mostly in the 1950s
The Census Bureau’s American Community Survey puts the median year built for Rosemead’s housing at 1959. The 1950s alone account for 4,089 of the city’s 15,447 homes, more than any other decade (ACS 2020–2024, year structure built). Older tanks don’t always take the parts sold for newer toilets, so we match the flapper and fill valve to the tank instead of forcing a one-size-fits-all part.
EPA’s WaterSense program says “Older, inefficient toilets that use as much as 6 gallons per flush also happen to be a major source of wasted water in many homes,” and its Fix a Leak Week page warns that a worn flapper “can cause your toilet to flush on its own or silently leak thousands of gallons a year.” If yours is an old high-flow model, swapping the whole toilet on the same flange may make more sense than new parts.
How a toilet repair goes
Diagnose
A dye test in the tank, a look at the fill height and a rock test at the base tell us whether it is the flapper, fill valve, bolts or wax ring.

Shut off and drain
The toilet stop is closed and the tank flushed empty.
Replace the worn part
Flapper, fill valve, flush valve or wax ring goes in, matched to your toilet model.
Adjust and test
Water level set to the line, several flushes, and the base checked for movement and moisture.
Bigger jobs, free estimate
A cracked closet flange, a drain that backs up into the tub when you flush, or a broken pipe below the floor is a bigger plumbing job with its own free estimate. A soft or stained floor around the base may need a flooring contractor as well. Once the flange or drain is repaired, we can set the toilet back and caulk the base.
While we’re out for this, Rosemead customers often add toilet replacement, shutoff valve replacement, caulking and grout repair, grab bar installation or faucet repair and replacement.
What to send us
A few seconds of video of the tank with the lid off while it runs, plus a photo of the base where it meets the floor. Send them by text to (310) 628-9399.
Toilet questions
What toilet seat size do I need?
Round or elongated; measure from the bolts to the front edge of the bowl.
Toilet keeps running after a flush. What fixes it?
A worn flapper or a fill valve set too high. We replace the part that’s failing.
Can you swap a toilet seat?
Yes. Bring or pick a round or elongated seat; stuck plastic or metal bolts get cut and replaced.
Water around the toilet base after flushing. What is it?
The wax seal under the toilet has given out. We lift the toilet and reset it on a new ring.
Why does my toilet whistle when I flush it?
The fill valve is worn and vibrates as it refills. Replacing it quiets the tank.

Can a handyman replace a toilet?
Yes, a new toilet in the same spot with a fresh wax ring and supply line.
Why does my toilet keep clogging?
Older low-flow toilets, too much paper, or a partly blocked drain can all do it. If it clogs with normal use, we check the trapway; repeated clogs in several fixtures point to the main line.
Why does my toilet bubble when I flush it?
Bubbling usually means air is being pushed back through the drain, often from a partial blockage further down or a vent problem. We check the toilet first, then tell you if the problem is further down the line.
How do I know my toilet is leaking silently?
Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank. If color shows in the bowl after 10 minutes without flushing, the flapper is leaking.
Why does my toilet rock?
Loose closet bolts or a worn wax ring. Leaving it can let water seep under the floor.
Can you replace the whole toilet?
Yes. Moving it to a new spot gets its own free estimate.
My toilet runs for a few seconds every so often. Why?
Water is slowly leaking past the flapper and the fill valve tops it up. A new flapper usually fixes it.
Do you fix weak flushes?
Often, by adjusting the chain, the water level, or clearing mineral from the rim holes.
Do you text before you come?
Yes, a text goes out before we head your way.
Can you still find parts for an original tank?
Usually. Parts depend on the toilet, and whatever it needs is spelled out in the quote before we start.
What if the floor under the toilet is soft?
We stop and show you, and nothing beyond the original quote happens until you say so.
How do I pay?
We take most payment options. The quote shows the total before any work begins.
It started running again a few weeks later. Now what?
Let us know. If something isn’t right after the job, we come back and take care of it.
Can a toilet tank overflow?
Water running down the overflow tube isn’t a flood, but it wastes water. A float set too high or a worn fill valve causes it.
How do I know if my toilet is a 10 or 12 rough-in?
Measure from the wall to the center of the bolt caps at the base. About 12 inches is standard; 10 and 14 are less common.
How do I fix a toilet handle?
A loose handle usually needs the nut inside the tank tightened, or a new handle and arm if it’s broken.
Will a universal flapper fit my toilet?
Many do, but not all. Tanks use 2-inch or 3-inch flush valves, and some brands need their own flapper to seal well. A photo of the flush valve opening tells us which size to bring.
How much water does a running toilet use?
A running toilet can waste a large amount of water each day, depending on how fast it leaks. The EPA WaterSense program names leaky toilets as one of the most common household leaks, and a flapper or fill valve is usually the fix.
