In short
We repair wood fences and gates: gates that drag or won’t latch get squared with a brace or cable, pickets and rails get replaced or refastened, and leaning posts get braced with steel stakes. A post rotted through gets an honest answer before work starts.
Your photo checklist
- The gate, closed, from the latch side
- The top corner where it drops
- Each hinge and its screws
- The base of any leaning post
- Broken boards or rails
Covered on a Rosemead visit
- Sagging wood gates squared up with an anti-sag kit or a diagonal brace
- Gate posts plumbed and stiffened so the gate has something solid to hang from
- Loose or split pickets and boards refastened or swapped to match
- Broken rails between posts sistered or replaced
- Leaning posts braced and reset when the footing is still sound
- Wrought iron fence panels: loose brackets and bolts tightened, rust spots treated and touched up
Outside what we take on
- New fences, decks or block walls built from scratch.
- Roof repairs and second-story eaves.
- Concrete work and tree trimming.
Side yards and driveway gates in older lots
The Census Bureau’s American Community Survey puts the median year Rosemead homes were built at 1959, and many lots still have the narrow side yard, a wood side gate and a back fence shared with two or three neighbors. Wood that has been through decades of sprinklers and summer sun dries, checks and lets go of its nails, so the gate drops, the latch misses, and the boards start to rattle.
Wrought iron is the other common sight on front walks and driveways here. Iron fence panels rarely fail outright; brackets loosen at the posts and paint lifts where sprinkler water sits. Tightening the brackets and treating the rust usually brings a run back without welding.
How a gate repair goes
Check the posts first
A gate can only hang as straight as the post it is screwed to. We push on the hinge post and look at the base for rot or a loose footing. If the post moves, bracing or resetting it comes before anything else, or the new hinges will sag again within a season.

Square the frame
Next we lift the latch side until the gate is square and lock it there with a diagonal brace running from the bottom hinge corner up to the top latch corner, or with a steel cable and turnbuckle. Braced the wrong way, a gate keeps dropping; braced from low hinge to high latch, it holds.

Fresh hardware in fresh wood
Hinge screws in old fence wood often spin in place. We move hinges a few inches to solid wood or use through-bolts, then set the latch so it catches without slamming. We finish by swinging the gate a dozen times to be sure it clears the ground and latches every time.

What goes to a fence contractor
We repair sections and gates on the fence you have. A whole new fence line, block or masonry walls, posts that have rotted below grade along a long run, automatic gate openers, or any welding goes to a fence or masonry contractor, and we tell you that in our first reply. If the fence sits on a shared line, it is worth a word with your neighbor before work starts.
While we’re out for this, Rosemead customers often add fence staining and sealing, gate latch and hinge repair, outdoor and motion light installation, lock and smart lock installation, light fixture replacement or doorbell and video doorbell installation.

Fence and gate questions
Can you replace a few fence boards?
Yes. Broken pickets and rails are swapped and stained to blend in.
Why does my gate keep sagging?
The frame racks or hinges loosen. We brace it.
How much does it cost to fix a fence gate in Rosemead?
Depends on gate and post. Send photos.
Can you replace a broken fence board?
Yes. We match the board width as closely as possible and fasten it to the rails.
Do you fix gate latches?
Yes. Most latch trouble on a fence starts with a leaning post, so we check the posts and the fence line first.
My wood gate drags on the ground. Does it need to be replaced?
Usually not. Gates sag when the frame racks out of square or the hinge screws loosen in old wood. We pull it square, add a brace or an anti-sag cable kit, and move the hinges to fresh wood if needed.
Can you fix just one section of fence?
Yes. If the posts on either side are solid, we replace the broken rails and boards in that bay and match the board style and height as closely as the lumber allows. New wood will look lighter until it weathers or is stained.
A post is leaning. What can be done?
If the post is sound and the footing has only shifted, we brace it plumb and reset it. If it has rotted off at the ground, it needs a new post, and on a long run of rotten posts we suggest a fence contractor instead.
Can you make my gate close and latch on its own?
Yes. A spring hinge or a gate closer plus a gravity latch will pull the gate shut and catch it, as long as the gate swings freely and hangs square first.
Do you work on iron fences and gates?
Yes, on alignment and fastening: loose brackets and bolts, posts that lean, plus rust spot treatment and touch-up paint. Cracked welds or new iron go to a welder.
Can one rotted post be replaced without redoing the fence?
Usually. The rails are unscrewed, the old footing is dug out, and a new post is set in concrete in the same spot.
What about where the fence meets a block wall?
There we use masonry anchors and a post bracket on the wall instead of digging next to its footing.
Why is my gate sagging at the top?
The latch-side top corner drops when hinge screws loosen or the frame racks. Tightening the hinges and adding a diagonal brace or cable pulls it back square.
How do you fix a leaning fence post?
If the wood above ground is sound, a steel repair stake driven beside it holds it straight. A post rotted at the ground needs to be reset.
