In short
We swap old ceiling and wall fixtures for new ones on the existing box and switch: down with the old, up with a new bracket if needed, wires joined, canopy snug, then tested. If the box is loose or the wiring brittle, we stop and tell you.
Your photo checklist
- The fixture you want replaced
- The new one, from the box or the listing
- The bathroom mirror and wall, for vanity lights
- The wall switch, and whether it is a dimmer
- Any wire you can see if the old fixture is already down
Covered on a Rosemead visit
- Flush and semi-flush ceiling lights
- Bathroom vanity lights over the mirror
- Pendants and small chandeliers on an existing ceiling box
- Porch and garage wall lights, sealed against weather
- LED retrofit trims in existing recessed cans
- Dimmers swapped into the same wall box
Outside what we take on
- Roof and foundation repairs.
- Opening framing or the roofline to reach a new fixture location.
- Projects big enough to need a general contractor.
Older boxes behind newer fixtures
More than half of Rosemead’s homes, 8,174 of 15,447, were built before 1960 (ACS 2020–2024, year structure built). Fixtures in those houses may have been changed more than once while the box behind them stayed original, so we check the box, the wires and how the old fixture was held up before the new one goes on.

A swap can also take some heat out of a room. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Saver guide says “ENERGY STAR certified light fixtures use 75% less energy, produce about 70% less heat than traditional models using incandescent light bulbs, and last about 10 times longer.”
How a fixture swap goes
Breaker off
We shut off the circuit and confirm the wires are dead with a tester.
Old fixture down
The fixture comes off and we look at the box, the wires and how it was attached.
New fixture up
A new crossbar if needed, wires connected, the fixture mounted square and tight to the ceiling or wall.
Test and tidy
Bulbs in, switch tested, and the old fixture and packaging removed.
Where the job stops
If we open the box and find one of these, we stop, show you, and put the old fixture back up safely. Once that's done, we can hang the new light.
While we’re out for this, Rosemead customers often add ceiling fan replacement, outlet, switch and GFCI replacement, outdoor and motion light installation or bathroom exhaust fan replacement.

Lighting questions
Can a handyman change a light fixture?
Yes, where wiring and a box are already there. We check the box can carry the new fixture.
Why does my light fixture buzz?
A dimmer not rated for LED or a loose wire. Changing the dimmer usually fixes it.
How long does it take to replace a light fixture?
Depends on the job; we’ll let you know after we see photos.
Can I put an LED bulb in my old fixture?
Usually yes. Check the fixture’s wattage label and whether it is enclosed; some LEDs are not rated for enclosed fixtures.
Why is there a bare ring on the ceiling?
The old fixture’s canopy covered paint that faded around it. We can touch it up.
Will a heavy chandelier hold on my box?
Only if the box is rated for the weight. If not, a stronger box has to go in first.
Can you hang a pendant at a set height?
Yes. We shorten the chain or cord to the height you want over a table or island.
Do you do outdoor wall lights?
Yes, sealed to the stucco with a drain gap at the bottom.
Can you swap a dimmer at the same time?
Yes, with one rated for LED.
What color temperature should I choose?
Warm white (around 2700K–3000K) for living spaces; cooler for garages and work areas.
Do you text before arriving?
Yes, we text before we head over.

My new fixture is heavier than the old one. Is that a problem?
It can be. We check what the box is rated for first, and if it isn’t up to the weight, we stop and ask before doing anything else.
Can you supply the fixture?
If you’d rather not shop, yes. The fixture and any parts are listed in the quote.
Can you work in an occupied rental?
Yes. Tenants can let us in, and a key or lockbox code works too.
What if the light flickers after you leave?
Text us. If something isn’t right after the job, we come back and take care of it.
How do I know if my light fixture is bad?
If new bulbs still flicker or don’t light, the socket or wiring inside the fixture may have failed.
How do I fix a light fixture pull chain?
A broken pull-chain switch can be replaced inside the fixture housing.
Can a light fixture just stop working?
Yes. A worn socket, a loose wire or a failed switch can each do it.
Can you replace a bathroom light fixture over the mirror?
Yes. Vanity bars mount to the wall box above the mirror. We check that the new bar centers on the box and clears the mirror and medicine cabinet.

What screws do I need for a replacement light fixture?
New fixtures include the mounting screws for their own bracket. Old boxes sometimes need different screws; we carry the common sizes so the bracket goes up tight.
