Hinges in older Rosemead houses
With a 1959 median build year, many Rosemead doors have hung on the same three hinges for decades. Short original screws loosen in the soft jamb wood, the top hinge pulls away, and the door drops onto the frame.
Heavier replacement doors make this worse, because the old hinges were sized for lighter hollow-core doors.
How it goes
Check the swing
We look at where the door rubs and which hinge has moved.
Fix the holes
Stripped holes get filled with glued wood so screws bite again.
Secure
A long screw goes into the stud behind the top hinge.
Adjust
The door is checked for even gaps and a clean latch.
Why hinges give out on Rosemead ranch-house doors
Most interior doors in Rosemead's postwar ranch homes hang on three 3½-inch hinges screwed into soft pine jambs. After decades of slamming, the top hinge screws strip first, because the top hinge carries most of the door's weight. The door then drops at the latch side, the corner rubs the head jamb, and people start lifting the knob to close it.

Heavier replacement doors make it worse. A solid-core door swapped in for an original hollow-core one can weigh twice as much, and the old short screws were never meant for that load. We usually find the fix is in the screws and the wood behind them, not in the hinge itself.
- Stripped holes filled with glued hardwood and redrilled, not stuffed with toothpicks
- At least one 3-inch screw per hinge driven through the jamb into the stud
- Hinge mortises shimmed or deepened so the gap at the latch side is even
- Squeaky pins cleaned and lubricated, or the hinge swapped if the knuckle is worn oval
Matching hinges in older homes
Rosemead houses from the 1950s often have hinges with rounded corners and an old brass or painted finish. We match corner radius and size so the new hinge drops into the existing mortise without chiseling a fresh one, and we tell you before we start if a matching finish is not available.

If several doors in the house sag the same way, it is worth checking them all on one visit. The cause is usually the same, and the fix is the same on each door.
Bigger door problems
A cracked or rotted frame, or a door that is badly warped, may need a new jamb or door. We’ll tell you which.
While we’re out for this, Rosemead customers often add interior door repair, door latch and knob repair or closet door repair.

Hinge questions
Why did my door stop latching after it started rubbing?
Both come from the same sag. Tightening the top hinge usually fixes both.

How do I fix a loose door hinge?
If the screws spin, the holes are stripped. They need filling or longer screws into the framing.
Why is my door rubbing at the top?
The top hinge has pulled out from the jamb. Securing it lifts the door back into place.
How do I stop a door from squeaking?
Cleaning the hinge pins and adding lubricant usually quiets it.
How much does door hinge repair cost?
It depends on the door. Text a photo for a free estimate.
