In short
Worn, loose or cracked outlets and switches get replaced like-for-like, and outlets by sinks, laundry and outdoors can become GFCIs. We test each with a tester. In older Rosemead homes, two-prong outlets are common; we explain the safe options instead of just swapping in three-prong.
Your photo checklist
- The outlet or switch
- Any discoloration around it
- Whether it is two-prong or three-prong
- Which outlets stopped working
- The breaker panel
Covered on a Rosemead visit
- Worn outlets that no longer grip a plug, swapped for new tamper-resistant ones
- GFCI outlets in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry areas, garages and patios
- Toggle and rocker switches, three-way switches and LED-rated dimmers
- USB outlets and smart switches where the box and wiring suit them
- Cracked or painted-over cover plates replaced
- Weather-resistant outlets with in-use covers on existing exterior boxes
Outside what we take on
- Roof and foundation repairs.
- Opening framing or the roofline to reach a new fixture location.
- Projects big enough to need a general contractor.
Outlets in Rosemead’s postwar houses
The Census Bureau’s American Community Survey gives 1959 as the median year Rosemead homes were built. In houses that age you will still find two-slot outlets with no ground, switches that have been flipped tens of thousands of times, and outlets in kitchens and baths that predate any ground-fault protection.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission’s 1989 guidance notes that homes built before 1973 can be upgraded by replacing old receptacles with receptacle-type GFCIs. Its GFCI fact sheet adds that “A GFCI works even on two-slot receptacles,” which makes a GFCI the practical upgrade for a bathroom or kitchen outlet in an older Rosemead home that has no ground wire.
How an outlet visit goes
Find the real problem
A dead outlet is often downstream of a tripped GFCI in another room. We trace the circuit with a tester before calling anything bad.
Power off and confirm
The breaker goes off and a non-contact tester confirms the box is dead before the cover comes off.
Replace the device
Wires are trimmed back to clean copper, connected to the new device on the screw terminals, and folded neatly into the box.
Test every point
A plug-in tester checks polarity and ground, GFCIs are tripped and reset, and dimmers are run through their range with your bulbs.
Bigger jobs, free estimate
Adding an outlet where there is none, moving a switch, adding a circuit, replacing a panel, or finding scorched, brittle or aluminum wiring in the box are all bigger electrical jobs, each with its own free estimate. If we find any of those, we stop, make the box safe, and tell you what we saw.
While we’re out for this, Rosemead customers often add holiday light hanging, light fixture replacement, ceiling fan replacement, under-cabinet lighting installation or smoke and carbon monoxide alarm installation.

Outlet and switch questions
Can a handyman replace a GFCI outlet?
Yes, on an existing box.
Why does my outlet buzz?
A loose wire or worn outlet. Stop using it and have it checked; we replace it and tighten the connections.
Why does my GFCI trip when it rains?
Water getting into an outdoor outlet or box. A weatherproof in-use cover and resealed box usually fix it.
How often should I test a GFCI?
The CPSC home safety checklist says to test every GFCI once a month: plug in a lamp, press TEST, and the light should go out; press RESET and it should come back.
Why does a whole row of outlets go dead at once?
One GFCI can protect outlets further along the same circuit. Look for a tripped GFCI in a bath, garage or outside wall and reset it.
Can I put a three-prong outlet on two-prong wiring?
Not as a plain grounded outlet. A GFCI is the usual answer, labeled “No equipment ground”.
Do I need a special dimmer for LED bulbs?
Yes. Older dimmers often make LEDs flicker or buzz. An LED-rated dimmer matched to your bulbs fixes it.
Why is my outlet warm?
Usually a loose connection or a worn device. Stop using it and send us a photo.
Can you add USB ports?
Yes. USB outlets fit a standard box in most cases. We check the box depth first.
Will a smart switch work in my old house?
Many need a neutral wire, which older switch boxes sometimes lack. We check before you buy, or choose a model that works without one.
Can a GFCI outlet cause a breaker to trip?
Usually the GFCI trips itself, not the breaker. If the breaker trips too, there may be a fault on the circuit.
Can one outlet go bad?
Yes. A single outlet can fail while the others on the same circuit keep working.
Can you add outlets to a room?
Often, by extending from a nearby outlet. The wall type and how the wire can be run decide the route.
Why is my GFCI outlet blinking red?
On many newer GFCIs, a blinking red light means the device failed its self-test and should be replaced. Some models blink when they have tripped; check the label on the outlet.
Why is my outlet not working after a power outage?
A surge can trip a GFCI or a breaker. Reset every GFCI, then check the panel. If the outlet is still dead, it may have been damaged and needs to be replaced.
