Why the hood matters in a Rosemead kitchen
The California Air Resources Board’s guidance on cooking pollution says natural gas stoves can release carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and other harmful pollutants, and that “The best way to ventilate your kitchen is to use a properly-installed, high efficiency range hood over your stove.” Its tips are simple: make sure the hood vents outdoors, use it whenever you cook, and cook on the back burners when you can.
The same agency’s combustion pollutant guidelines warn that “Ductless” hoods “are not effective because they exhaust into the house rather than outside.” Many Rosemead kitchens, last updated decades ago, still have a recirculating hood or a microwave that blows air back into the room. Where a duct is already in place, we can put a vented hood on it.
How a hood swap goes
Check the duct
We look at where the old hood exhausts: through the cabinet to the roof, out the wall, or nowhere. That decides which new hood fits without new ductwork.

Remove the old hood
Power is shut off at the breaker, the hood is unwired and lowered, and the duct opening is cleaned of grease.

Mount and connect
The new hood is fastened to the cabinet or wall framing, the duct is joined and taped with foil tape, and the wiring is connected in the hood’s junction box.

Test the draft
We run every fan speed and the light, and confirm the damper opens so air leaves the house.
Bigger jobs, free estimate
Cutting a new duct through a roof or exterior wall or running a new circuit gets its own free estimate; gas line work at the stove is outside our scope. We work on the duct and wiring you already have.
While we’re out for this, Rosemead customers often add under-cabinet lighting installation, cabinet door and drawer repair, outlet, switch and GFCI replacement or light fixture replacement.

Range hood questions
Can you swap my range hood for the same size?
Yes. Like-for-like swaps use the existing duct and wiring.
Why does my range hood turn on by itself?
Many hoods have a heat sensor that starts the fan when the cooktop is hot. If it runs with the stove off, the control may be faulty.
How much does it cost to replace a range hood?
It depends on the hood and the duct. Send a photo and the model.
My roof cap never opens. Can you help?
We can free a stuck damper at the hood. A jammed roof cap on the roof itself is a roofing visit.
Do you install duct covers for chimney hoods?
Yes, when they come with the hood and the ceiling height matches.
Can the hood share a duct with a bathroom fan?
No. Each needs its own duct to the outside.
What if my cabinet is too short for the new hood?
Some slim hoods fit short cabinets. We measure before you buy.
Can a vented hood replace a recirculating one?
Only if a duct to the outside already exists. We check before you buy.
What size hood should I get?
At least as wide as the cooktop. Wider is better for capturing smoke.
How often should I clean the filters?
CARB advises cleaning metal mesh filters with detergent when they look grimy; most can go in the dishwasher.
Is a quieter hood worth it?
Yes. CARB’s residential cooking study recommends a low-noise hood vented to the outdoors. A quiet hood is also one you are more likely to turn on.
Can you swap a microwave hood?
Yes, for another microwave hood or a vented hood on the same opening and outlet.
Do you take the old hood away?
Yes, unless you want to keep it.
