Floors in Rosemead ranch houses
Around Rosemead’s 1959 median build year, many houses were built on raised wood floors over a crawlspace or on slabs with later wood or laminate on top. Raised floors move a little with every season, and nails that held tight for decades slowly lose their grip, which is when the squeaks start.
If you have a crawlspace, the best fix is usually from underneath, with shims and screws where the subfloor meets the joist. On a slab, or where there’s no way under, we work from above with screws designed to be hidden.
Finding and silencing a squeak
Find it
One person walks the floor while the other listens and marks the exact spot.

Locate the joist
We find the framing below so the fix pulls the floor to wood, not just to the subfloor.
Fasten or shim
Screws go in from above, or shims and screws from the crawlspace, depending on access.
Walk it again
We test the area and fill any visible holes so the floor looks the same.
When it’s more than a squeak
Floors that sag, bounce a lot, or feel soft over a large area point to framing or moisture problems, which are outside our scope.

While we’re out for this, Rosemead customers often add vinyl plank and laminate floor repair, drywall patching and crack repair, interior door repair or baseboard repair.

Squeaky floor questions
Why does my floor squeak when I walk on it?
Usually the subfloor has pulled away from a joist or boards rub on each other or on a nail. Fastening it tight stops the movement.
Can a handyman fix squeaky floors?
Yes. Most squeaks are fixed with screws from above or shims from below, with no need to lift the floor.
Can you fix a squeak under carpet?
Yes. Special screws go through the carpet into the joist and snap off below the surface.
Will screws show on hardwood?
Barely. We countersink them and fill the holes with matching filler, so they’re hard to spot.
How much does squeaky floor repair cost?
It depends on how many spots and the access. A video gets you a free estimate before anything is booked.

Why does my laminate floor click?
Floating floors need room to move. If they’re pinned at the walls, they buckle and click.
